Four Labours of Heracles

Situated on the west coast of the Mani peninsula, Areopolis is the picturesque administrative and commercial centre of Mani. Its name derives from ‘Areos Polis’, meaning the ‘City of Ares’ (Mars), the ancient Greek god of war. Fittingly it was at Areopolis that Maniot insurrection against the occupying Ottoman Turks was proclaimed on 17 March, 1821; this inspired the subsequent Greek war of independence a week later.

The town is adorned with traditional houses, old chapels, stone-paved alleys and characteristic Maniot tower-houses.

Areopolis is an ideal starting-point for the network of marked paths which are the ideal way to explore the hidden wonders of Mani.
